Vista House: Timelapse from Oregon's Columbia River Gorge
The Columbia River Gorge is one of the crown jewels of Oregon state and being only 15 minutes from my house for 4 of the last 7 years, it was an obvious choice for me to go shoot. Vista House is one of the most iconic places in the Gorge as it’s a beautiful building that stands 600+ feet above the river. I had always known that twice a year the sun rises out of one of the peaks on the Washington side of the river and the sun's rays bathe Vista House in glorious backlighting.
Stars Over the Old Mill: Sony a7riii + Milky Way
Night photography has its allure, as well as its challenges. There is something restorative about spending a quiet evening in the mountains or desert under the stars. Likewise, capturing light trails on a busy city street can be energizing and cause the creative juices to flow. A proposed night shoot at the Motor Transport Museum in Campo, California really piqued my interest, as it combined a bit of both worlds. Over two-hundred old cars, trucks, and buses are there—some over a century old—scattered haphazardly on the grounds of an abandoned feldspar mill. The shoot was also to be a fond farewell to this year’s Milky Way season.
Bryce Canyon National Park: Comet Neowise + Thor's Hammer
It's amazing to me that something only 5 kilometers (3 miles) in diameter, made up of only ice and rubble, can put on such a show with its dust and ion tails, and do this from over 64 million miles away (103 million km)!
Milky Way Over the High Uintas Wilderness: Canon 70D + Stack, Blend, and Sequator
Growing up in northeastern Utah was the perfect place to view the stars. There was rarely a summer night that wasn’t spent outside sleeping on the trampoline. Staring up into the dark sky, you could clearly see every little star and constellation within the northern hemisphere, and it was always amazing to see an occasional falling star brightly streak across the sky. When the galactic core of the Milky Way starts rising above the horizon in the northern hemisphere, the High Uintas Wilderness in northeastern Utah is the perfect place to capture this view. The galactic core is visible as early as April; however, there are a few challenges during this time of year.
The Core Over the Italian Dolomites: Nikon D610
For many years I dreamt to reach this location and sleep near the glacier with my tent. However only this summer I had the opportunity to visit. I got lucky and had perfect conditions for a night photography session; clear skies and a new moon. When I first saw the preview image on my LCD monitor the only thing that I was on my mind was “Yes man, I’ve dreamt of this shot for years!”.
Blue Angels Over Mount Rushmore: Sony a7riii
As the sun began to set the sky erupted in a beautiful orange glow. Activity near Mount Rushmore began to pick up as Air Force One flew overhead, followed by a trio of helicopters, to include Marine One. Shortly after Marine One touched down at the monument, the famed Blue Angels came roaring over the monument as the crowds gathered on the hillside with me!
